FAQs

Frequently asked questions for first-timers to North Captiva Island and Coconut Castaway

Please note that all of the following information is covered in more detail in a welcome packet that we email each guest after booking.

Q: Can I drive to the island?
A: No. North Captiva Island is a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico with no bridges.
Q: How do I get to the island?
A: We recommend Island Girl Charters as they have set times available and go to the dock where our property manager will greet you for check-in. You can also hire a private boat captain for off hours.
Q: We won't have a car, is there an airport shuttle to the ferry?
A: We recommend booking Pine Island Taxi, especially for larger groups, as they're familiar with the ferry services to North Captiva. If you have a smaller group you could even take a taxi, Uber or Lyft.
Q: Are cars allowed on the ferries?
A: No. If you drive, you would park your car at the ferry location for a nightly fee. When you go over to the island you will have use of electric golf carts for transportation.
Q: Is there a grocery store on the island?
A. No. There are a few ways to get groceries, including bringing them over with you on the ferry, or you can have a grocery service shop it and stock the home for you.
Q: Are pets allowed at Coconut Castaway?
A. No. Due to severe allergies we do not allow pets at the home. If you have a service animal, you will be provided a form to complete prior to your stay.
Q: Do I have access to the pools, tennis courts, kayaks and bicycles on the island?
A. Yes. We have a membership with North Captiva Island Club (NCIC) which offers our guests with access to the pools, tennis courts, kayaks and bicycles.
Q: How far away are the pools from the home?
A: The pools at NCIC are approximately 1/2 mile from the home.
Q: How do I get to Coconut Castaway once I arrive to the island?
A. Our property manager will email a request for you to provide arrival information and they will then be waiting at the dock based on your arrival time. They will take you to the house and show you around the grounds. For first timers, they will also provide a guided tour of the island, if time allows.
Q: Can we visit neighboring islands?
A: Yes. There are several captains and companies that offer day excurtions to the surrounding islands.
Q: Where can I get fishing gear on the island?
A: You can rent fishing gear at Boats 'N Fun, or you can also purchase fishing gear at Mainstay Outfitters.
Q: Do you have beach chairs, umbrellas, etc. that we can take to the beach?
A: Yes. We have 8 beach chairs and two beach umbrellas. We also have a medium sized cooler you can use.
Q: What kind of coffee maker do you have?
A: We have both a Mr. Coffee and a Keurig, so you can bring either ground coffee or Keurig pods with you.
Q: What kind of grill do you have?
A: We have a propane Weber grill on the ground level. If you happen to run out of propane during your vacation, the property manager will bring a replacement tank.
Q: What other appliances are available at the home?
A: We have a toaster, blender, hand mixer, slow cooker, coffee grinder, electric griddle.
Q: Do you have a water purifier at the home?
A: At the kitchen sink we have a reverse osmosis water spigot so you can fill water bottles, glasses, etc. using the filtered water. The home has a water softening system as well. Please note - when the well water is being pumped into the tanks on the ground level there may be a slight sulfur smell. This is common. We also water our grounds with untreated water, so you may smell it then as well.
